Principal's Message

Greetings Fellow Huskies and Friends,

Now that we are approaching the end of the first trimester, we are excited to celebrate some of our accomplishments so far. This year we have entered into a partnership with the Playworks program. This is a recess management program that is focused on bringing about positive play and respect on the school playground. Our Playworks coach, Coach D, has been working with our staff to help set guidelines and standards of behavior and play for all students. We have seen a significant reduction in recess time referrals and if you just take a look during recess time, you will see students engaged in a variety of different games on campus. We also are training junior coaches to help develop leadership skills with some of our students.
Our teachers have recently received some new strategies for ELD (English Language Development) through the assistance of Mrs. Perez, one of the district's Teacher Effectiveness Coaches. She will be coming here for different times during the year to assist our teachers in developing great strategies in ELD instruction. We also are implementing the SIPPS reading program in grades 1-3 to help our students become more fluent readers.
We recently had our first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Night with the assistance of graduate students from UCI. Students and parents came out to participate in experiments that were fun and engaging for all. Members of the Esqueda band joined other intermediate schools at the Santa Ana vs. Segerstrom Football game where they were able to join the Santa Ana High School Band on the field before the game. Our students have also participated in the recent Speech and Debate Tournament and the Intermediate Sports Tournament to play flag football and volleyball. Now they are gearing up for the girls' basketball and boys' soccer tournament in December. Mrs. Davis, Mr. Turf, and some of our students joined the Runstrong program and competed in a 5K race in Tustin along with other schools from SAUSD.
We have set up a COST (Coordination of Services Team) to address the many academic and social-emotional concerns of the students. If you feel that your child may be in need of these services, please let your teacher know or contact the front office. Also, many teachers have begun after school tutoring programs so please check with your child's teacher to see if there is an opportunity for them to get some help.
As we head into the winter season, please remember to be aware of the changing weather and the colds that may come with it. It is always a great reminder to students and parents to remember to wash your hands frequently with soap and water to ward off any potential germs that are hanging around.
Let's press forward and finish off 2016 with our best effort!
Kevin Tonai
