Principal's Message

A Message from Linda Bell, Principal L. Bell

Welcome to a new year at Jim Thorpe Fundamental School!  We are looking forward to another school year of working with parents and our community to ensure that our students have their best ever at school. We are proud to tell you that Thorpe has been designated a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. We received this award for the work that we have done in improving the achievement of our students and in closing the achievement gap. We have also received the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award for 2010 and 2011, and California Distinguished School recognition for 2006 and 2010.

Thorpe students have made outstanding progress on our California Standards Test taken last spring. In English Language Arts 76% of our students scored as proficient or advanced, and in Math, 86% scored as proficient or advanced, reflecting growth in both areas. Additionally, our Academic Performance Index (API) has risen to 901! These results are a direct reflection of the hard work of our students, of the dedication of our talented staff, in addition to the commitment and support for our high standards demonstrated by our parent community.

Our focus on scholarliness, good citizenship, and high expectations can be supported by promoting good work habits at home and by maintaining communication with our teachers and staff. Together we reinforce pride-in-accomplishment within our students as they grow to see themselves as confident, “college-bound”, life-long learners. We continue to maintain communication with parents to promote our Fundamental School Agreement and to assist families in complying with our expectations for attendance, work completion, behavior, and Dress Code. Our parent groups, such as the PTA and ELAC, are very active and welcome participation to support and enhance our programs. This year we have welcomed several new staff members to our team as a result of increased enrollment, retirements, promotions. I’m sure you will find that they are all wonderful additions to Team Thorpe!

As the principal of Jim Thorpe Fundamental, it is my personal belief that each student is a unique and precious individual for whom we have the privilege of providing the best educational opportunities. When we combine the efforts of our dedicated staff with those of our committed parents, the result is a partnership that is most beneficial to our young learners. Our Assistant Principal, Jaime Ramirez, our staff, and I work hard to ensure that all students have a successful school year, in fact, the best year ever! If you wish to know more about the work being done at our school, please feel free to call our office at (714) 430-5800. Information about upcoming events is also available by visiting the PTA page under Organizations.

Jim Thorpe Fundamental School is one of seven fundamental schools in the Santa Ana Unified School District—three fundamental elementary schools, three fundamental intermediate schools, and one fundamental high school.

We are an alternative school whose parents have voluntarily enrolled their children in our program. As a fundamental school, our emphasis is on establishing an atmosphere of fair, firm, consistent discipline and support that promotes academic achievement, patriotism and the development of student pride and responsibility.

Upon enrollment and at the beginning of each school year, parents and students sign the Fundamental School Agreement to support school policies and procedures. These include high expectations for attendance appropriate behavior, adherence to the school uniform and non-uniform dress codes, parent involvement in homework supervision, and regular communication between home and school. Since Thorpe is not a neighborhood school, parents are responsible for student transportation to and from school.

jt wheaties boxThe school was named after Jim Thorpe, the famous athlete and Native American who won Olympic gold medals in 1912 in the Pentathlon and Decathlon field and track events. In January 2002, Jim Thorpe was named the ABC Wide World of Sports' Athlete of the Century. His dedication, perseverance, and outstanding accomplishments are the inspiration for our school’s goal of “Aiming High” with every student “College Bound.”

Construction for Jim Thorpe Fundamental School started in August 1997 and with the school opening on September 7, 1999. The school is a two-story facility consisting of 55,000 square feet on 6.6 acres on the corner of Greenville and Alton streets. There are 35 classrooms, a central two-story, circular library, a multipurpose room with a stage, administrative offices and a food service area with a covered lunch area.
